Quantum Gate Makes Way for Quantum Computer

Physicists from Maryland, Konstanz and Princeton have joined hands to develop a basic element for quantum computer. This element is called quantum gate. The results of the research has been published online, ahead of its print.

Quantum Computers will be Far More Efficient than Conventional Computers

The invention has already been hailed as a milestone in the history of quantum computer. This time, the quantum gate was developed for a system of two-quantum bit that is comprised of silicon. This quantum gate is capable of performing all the required rudimentary functions of a quantum computer. The primary storage unit is nothing but individual electrons’ electron spin.

However, it will be a while before the very first quantum systems hit the departmental stores. Quantum computers are a way forward for today’s computers. It is expected to be way more efficient and thus will be capable of solving problems that existing systems cannot. Furthermore, quantum computer also reacts in a far more sensitive way with external disturbances as compared to conventional computers.

Eventually, the scientists are looking forward to the creation of stable quantum gate which will be the very fundamental building block of quantum computers. The quantum gate that has been created by the scientists of the afore-mentioned universities makes use of individual electrons that are found inside silicon to save information. It is also capable of reading and controlling the interaction between two quantum bits. Silicon will be the base material for the creation of such quantum gates.

The results were published online on 7 December 2017 in First Release of the journal named Science.
